Merlin was truly impressed - and not just in the manner of n eighteenth century British sailor welcomed into in his majesty's navy. He had learned that Nimue had served with distinction in the Halls of Avalon - no mean feat! She had studied long and hard the virtues of prudence, justice, temperance, courage, faith hope and charity. This must have been particularly hard for a water nymph - and because of this, her instructors had also paid particular attention to the additional virtues of chastity, humility, diligence and kindness.
There were other arts one learned at Avalon as well, arts not spoken of in polite company. She had learned the wisdom of the Old Ways, devoted to the earth spirits and Magik. One might compare the intensity of the courses to a modern university. Upon graduation, the students were well equipped to work their Magik for the betterment of the earth and mankind. They were familiar with the tomes which gave knowledge and in some cases their Magik even approached that of Magicians in their ability to conceal their true thoughts and to manipulate the thoughts of lesser creatures.
Merlin was proud of Nimue in the way someone feels immense happiness for a friend who has succeeded. This is a feeling of empathy which cannot be described - one has to experience it to know it. Merlin had known Nimue was clever from the first moment he had laid eyes on her and marveled at her bravery, teasing and sense of wry humor. He sat with a bemused look on his face, never quite knowing what she would come up with next. In all of his years of knowing her, he had never been bored with her antics.
Perhaps she loved him beyond any other, perhaps she despised him as an interloper; it made no difference. He found her fascinating and when he read the deck of cards which fortold the future, he found her very funny. She had a wonderful comic sense and the magician found himself rolling his eyes at her fabulous puns.
She might love him or have her friends give him the message that she hated him. His feelings toward her would always be that of the highest Love and respect.
Merlin thought of her mischievous eyes and smiled.
